It is 1882-1883 Paris, France, and both the Parisiens and visitors alike bustle about in their daily lives. In the very heart of Paris is the recently constructed Op?ra Garnier, where performers, and scene-shifters, and all sorts of people from all sorts of professions busy themselves with maintenance and with preparations for performances.
Unknown to all but a small handful (and even to most of these, only as a myth), a spectre of a man dwells below them in the cellars, watching them, musing upon them, and occasionally preying upon their fears for sport, or acting as an invisible puppet master to the company.
Who knows what terrors this mysterious "Phantom" is capable of, or what surprisingly frightening or blissfully wondrous secrets he may have in store.

Ten o'clock in the morning and her majesty la Diva was not up yet. Amélie had already prepared breakfast twice on the off chance that Carlotta would wake earlier, or at least at a reasonable hour. It was bad enough that the woman came in late last night and Amélie had to wait up to ready her for bed. In truth, Amélie did not mind so much. She loved hearing all the gossip from the evening. Still, it was a chore to be constantly working at the capricious whims of her friend and employer.
Quietly, deciding that something must be done before Carlotta was late, Amélie stole quietly into the room carrying the tray of tea and a light breakfast. Setting down the tray with barely a sound on the small coffee table in the room Amélie snuck over to the large window and slowly opened the curtains so that light crept into the room and over the bed to the groan and complaints of Carlotta. Amélie smiled to herself and shook her head. This was going to be more of a challenge than usual. It was a good thing she came prepared.
"Madame la Diva....it's time. You don't want to be late for rehearsal do you? Oh and you received new flowers....chocolates....and your new dress is finished- with the fur trim...." Amélie smiled knowingly and produced the garment sweeping it out of the closet where she had placed in the night before. She gently flared it out and brushed it out with as much drama as she could muster knowing that the one person who matched her love for beautiful things was her mistress.

ZzzZzzzZZZzzzz..... The Spanish maiden wished for only sleep. Carlotta always had to work so hard, late into the night then early the next day, it was exhausting really. If she had the chance to sleep, she took absolute full advantage of it. She took naps between rehearsal and so on and so forth, just to get some rest into the day and night. The poor diva did so much all the time!
Sleep was no exception this morning, nearly noon really, when lights suddenly flooded into her cube of darkness and covered her head with the blanket once more to get some of the darkness and comfort of sleep back. Couldn't she ever get some sleep around here? She was awake under the covers, her squinted eyes making no attempt to stay open for long as she agitatedly tried to fall back asleep. Carlotta could care less about rehearsal right now, her needs came first and they needed her more than she needed them now.
Ah... but then the next few magic words had Carlotta sitting up wide eyed as if someone had yelled fire and splashed cold water on her. The only difference there was that she had sat up with a smile and instead of a shock filled expression, it was filled with a child like glee. Fur, one of the diva's weaknesses. "Ah! It is? Wonderful! Se ve tan hermosa! Buen trabajo maravilloso! Gracias Amelie," she said happily as she eagerly grasped the new dress. Oh how she LOVED her new things... especially when those things where trimmed in fur! There was absolutely no one that she knew of that could do so well of a job as her maid. She only trusted her with her best of clothing. The diva cradled the dress tenderly, very pleased with it.

Amélie smiled brightly and counted down in her head after saying the words, 'fur trim.' 5...4...3...2...1...And just as suspected just at that moment Carlotta was already popping her head out of the covers with a bright smiling and scurrying over to the brand new dress like a child on Christmas day. Amélie stood back and watched her Mistress admiring the fine workmanship of the stitching and how the fur seemed to grow from the cloth itself. The admiration of course was well worth the hours spent working on the garment. Just to hear how pleased Carlotta was made Amélie smile and fill with pride at all the praise she was being given. It was moments like this when she knew that all the work to save up for a small shop would be worth it. If her skills could please one of the pickiest women in Paris Amélie knew she could succeed with all the rest. But that was a long time off yet...
Still, no time to bask in the glory of the kind words. She had to get Carlotta fed and ready for rehersal and clean the room and place the orders of goods that were needed for the week. No time for a simple minute of praise. Letting Carlotta spend a few more moments with her new gown, Amélie moved quickly to set out the breakfast on the little table Carlotta had in the corner of the room. She lifted the solid silver dome from the plate and set out Carlotta's hand picked silverware of the finest quality- Spanish silver of course. Scooping the tea leaves into the lovely hand painted China cup and then following it with fresh hot water Amélie pulled out the chair and waited patiently for Carlotta to come to the breakfast table. "Do you want to wear that today or did you have something different in mind?"

Carlotta saw Amelie soon get to work and set out the breakfast and do her job, something she did well constantly, and had asked if she would like to wear the dress today. "Oh yes, this dress will do just perfectly today!" She snuggled with the dress for a moment longer before laying it gently down onto her bed and walking over to the tea which she approved of. Any kind of tea was her kind of tea, normally anyways, and today just happened to be one of those days.
However, there was another common thing with Carlotta, she was a little more picky over her food. For various reasons she could decide she doesn't like something one day and love it the next. The reason is never the same but whatever Carlotta thought, goes. The moment she looked at her food, she turned up her nose at it. "I want something else," the young Spaniard said monotonously. One knew better than to ask Carlotta what she would rather have - she had little idea herself! As long as it was made quickly and ended up being something she did want - whatever that was- she would be content.
Carlotta sat down smiled a little as she took in a deep breath and smelled the scent of the tea. "I love the tea today though... perhaps I can have two cups in before I get ready for rehearsal... they can wait. They always do," she giggled. Well, they didn't exactly wait for her when she was late. They would postpone it for as long as they could then began a slow start, trying not to leave the diva out too much, afraid of what strings she would pull if they went too far without her. Carlotta relaxed as new food was fetched for her and she continued to smell the tea. Oh how mightily good that tea will taste! It smelt absolutely nice and soothing, another good thing to happen this morning along with the beautifully finished dress.

If it wasn't one thing it was another. But it seemed that this morning was going far more smoothly than most thanks to the introduction of the dress. Dear Carlotta was still over by the wardrobe fondling the material and holding it close to her body. It was almost child like really how much Carlotta adored new things. It made her tantrums a little more bearable when someone stopped and looked at her like this- in one of her good moods. It was almost enough to remind someone that she really was, in many ways, still a child- albeit a powerful one.
And this morning the child seemed not pleased with her usual Thursday morning breakfast. Amélie nodded indulgently. She knew better than to ask Carlotta what could possibly be wrong with the breakfast to dismiss it so quickly. Amélie also knew better than to ask if Carlotta had a craving for anything. It would be folly to expect the great Diva to make up her mind so quickly. Besides, if Carlotta wanted something it was very rarely the case when she didn't make it know to everyone around her.
Masking her annoyance and Carlotta's picky ways and walked calmly to the door and rang. Very quickly, as if any other speed were expected in this house, a lesser servant appeared. Amélie handed over the tray with the undesirable breakfast and placed an order for something on the other end. Perhaps some kind of sweets. Yes. Ordering a fresh croissant with strawberries and some drizzled chocolate for Carlotta Amélie waved away the little maid and shut the door firmly. At least, Amélie noted with some satisfaction, Carlotta was enjoying the tea.
"I'm happy you like it. I just picked it out myself yesterday. Apparently it is a special fusion made only by one little quaint shop. They take the finest tea leaves in the orient and let them sit alongside fresh berries to pick up the aroma. Quite expensive." Amélie turned her attentions to the dress and smoothed it out before unlacing it. Moving quietly toward the wardrobe Amélie had just enough time to remove some fresh petticoats and a corset before the new breakfast arrived.
Shooing the younger maid Amélie took the silver tray and placed it in front of Carlotta before removing the dome with a small flourish. "Better I trust? If not I can have them try something else, but this seemed like it would fit the morning..."

Carlotta stretched her arms down and out to her sides then stifled a morning yawn, awaiting the service of her employees. Amelie spoke to her about how she had picked out the tea herself, the finest tea leaves and quite expensive. That's what Carlotta liked to hear. It would just be madness to the diva if the most expensive wasn't made the best, after all, it takes up the most money and makes people happy which must make people work better.
Quickly, a new silver tray had been set before her and with the dome removed, Carlotta smiled happily, pleased at this new breakfast. "Much better," she said with a nod of approval. Happily she dug into the croissant first, oh how she loved fresh warm croissants, then half way through she put it down and began to gorge herself in the heavenly chocolate and strawberry breakfast. Today must be a good day, her dress getting finished and the new wonderful breakfast, it was all a good omen that things were going her way. Anything bad hadn't made itself known to her yet and she planned to keep it that way.
After she finished the strawberries, she slowly ate the last half of her cooled croissant then happily finished it off with another sip of her tea. The young Spanish woman walked over to the outfit that had been set out for her. Ah yes.... that corset, it was one of her better corsets made by only the best in Carlotta's taste. But... "I don't want that corset today. Today is going to be a good day, Amelie, Puedo sentirlo en mis huesos," she said smiling after having said that she didn't want that corset today. Hmm... what corset did she want? Maybe the one that had silver lace... or perhaps the one with blue lining. Oh she had no clue what she wanted, but that was part of Amelie's job, to go through the close till Carlotta finally did know what she wanted.

Well there was the tea done and the breakfast replacement seemed to be pleasing to Carlotta at the very least. In fact it seemed more than pleasing. If Carlotta ate the whole then then perhaps a looser corset might be in order. The one with with pink ribbon, but pink would not be in her favor today- blue perhaps or mauve. Either way the corset would have to be changed. Carlotta would insist on it for one reason or another any way. It was not a normal morning if at least three or four changes were not demanded each day. Amélie was sure that her record had been two changes total, but she was sure Carlotta had either been ill or slightly hung over from a premier party the previous evening for that to happen. Such would probably not be the case today.
Sure enough as the breakfast was pushed to the side Carlotta had walked over to the bed and rejected the corset. That was two. The record would certainly not be broken today. The best Amélie could hope for was getting through the long morning routine with as few changes as possible while making the first change the final one as well. Then again, some days that didn't even go well. But today Carlotta was so perky there might just be a prayer for that to be the case!
Picking through the wardrobe Amélie pulled out the corset with the blue lining and held it against the gown. It would serve though it was not the best. Picking out a silver corset that was really more appropriate for an evening gown than a day dress Amélie tested it against the garment before decisively putting it back from whence it came. The cut was not right. She would look even more ridiculous in that one rather than the blue one. The blue one it was. The one on the bed would have been better, but what did Amélie know- she just designed clothes and dressed Carlotta all day!
With a bright smile Amélie nodded in agreement. She could only hope Carlotta was right. Then again sometimes her dear employer was so fickle her bones probably didn't even know what they wanted- but Amélie was not paid to say ugly things; especially not on a 'good' morning. "I believe you are right Mademoiselle. A most wonderful day! Is this acceptable?"

Oh how Carlotta loved how Amelie was sometimes able to read her mind, though sometimes it did even annoy her as much as she loved it. She disliked someone knowing about her as much as she did and yet at certain times and indeed - most times - it made life much easier for her and all she had to do was sleep, eat, and sing which was good enough for her.
The diva studied the blue lined corset that she had just been thinking about... this one would definitely do... unless perhaps the one more pale orange would deem better. She moved her lips to the side and squinted her eyes slightly with a scrunched up nose as she thought deeply. It was only normal that someone like her would take so much time to go through her clothes and make sure it's absolutely perfect to her tastes and appearance. Especially someone who would be very well recognized such as herself, performing at the top of the opera house.
"Yes... I suppose it's acceptable. But what about the... auburn laced one? You know, the one I got about a week and a half ago? How do you think that would go? Or perhaps that crimson one that I wore to the last rehearsal last month? You know how much I trust your judgement." Carlotta said as her face relaxed once more as she looked on to her friend and maid. Oh yes, it wasn't often she went ahead and say how much she trusted someone other than herself's thinking but today was a good day, she could risk putting someone's pride up a little higher for the moment - especially Amelie's.

Oh no. Not that face. Anything but that face! Carlotta was making the face. The face that said 'i'm about to make things just a bit more difficult for you this morning because I can even though I don't realize I am about to make things difficult.' It had been such a good morning too! Only two changes thus far and both of them right on the first try. Now Carlotta was going to start being troublesome. It wasn't that she intended to of course. Poor thing really was like a child sometimes; she never really knew what she wanted until someone showed her or told her. Of course, Amélie would never voice such an opinion out loud. Still, when Carlotta was making up her mind- or at least trying to, it was an often enough though in Amélie's head. Still, she knew she had to play along.
It seemed the corset was the issue. Amélie really thought that the one she had picked out the first time, and the second time was really the right choice, but what did she know! She just was someone who wanted to make fashion her whole life. What would that have to do with choosing a corset for goodness sakes! Still, Amélie knew she had a job to do, all sarcastic thoughts aside. It really was a slightly rude thought. After all, Carlotta had taken the time to compliment her opinion- even though it was ignored just as often as it was listened to. That was a rare enough occurrence that Amélie knew she should be at least a little bit grateful.
Pursing her lips, Amélie returned to the wardrobe and surveyed her options. Carlotta wanted either the auburn lacing or the scarlet corset. It was a tough choice between bad and worse. Neither would really flatter the shape of this particular dress. The auburn was from an old costume and had a rather old fashioned shape to it and the scarlet was just plain ostentatious. Honestly, the scarlet was the less of two evils but the blue would be far more becoming with the shape of the dress and would allow for better breathing that the scarlet. "The scarlet would be the better of the two, however, given the aria scheduled for rehearsal today, I recommend the blue. It is a little more....flexible and would better accommodate your needs. The scarlet is much better for evening attire and I would hate for you to feel constrained during practice."
Post by Carlotta Corazón on Nov 12, 2013 14:36:43 GMT -5
Carlotta was only half listening to Amelie and caught only flexible and comfortable. "Si, Si, that will be fine. Blue it is then," the Spaniard caved in quickly and wished to get on with her day. Some days she indeed enjoyed staying and arguing just to see where it would end up but she did not have that patience this morning even for how well her mood was.
"Tonight I think I shall go out to eat, perhaps I'll wear the scarlet then. See to it that I have a nice dress for tonight, red - I think I shall wish to wear red tonight," Carlotta said then looked back to her dress once again and allowed her fingers to lightly drag across the fur then took her hand back and looked around the room for a moment. Quickly now she sat at her mirror where she began to play with her hair, thinking of the dress and which hair style would flatter both her and her dress the most.
"Amelie, would you tie up my hair with the bronze ribbon? I think that'll due nicely with the dress. No estás de acuerdo? Oh, and what time is it? Never mind, I don't care to know. The managers will probably remind me when I get there," she rolled her eyes slightly. No, she didn't exactly have a bone to pick with the managers but they were there for her torment and easy to bend thus were an easy and delightful target to Carlotta's whining and complaining. They were like servants only they talked much more then they should and didn't nearly have as much intelligence as all the ones she had ever met. In fact, many were blades of grass underneath the hurricane of Carlotta's demands.
