CHRISTINE DAAÉ
Character Information
Full Name: Christine Daaé (Her middle name is a secret )
Date of Birth: August 20th, 1864
Original or Canon?: Cannon... ka-BOOM!
Face Claim: Christine Nilsson
Physicality
Gender: Female
Age: 17 (when she starts at the opera. 18 when Raoul comes back into the picture)
Hair: Golden Blonde
Eyes: Clear Blue Doe eyes
Height: 5'1
Body Type: She is very petite with an hourglass curve that is typical of the period. She has slender limbs, and her arms are a bit long for her height.
Complexion: very fair skinned, pale with rosy features
Description: Christine is a pretty girl with fair features typical of her Scandinavian heritage. Her blonde hair has a natural slight wave to it, but she often ears it in long barley curls, half-up half-down. When she does not have it in curls, she typically braids it and/or pins it up. She has high cheekbones, a wide jaw, and a long face (both literally, and oftentimes metaphorically). She’s very small with tiny hands and feet, but ling limbs and a shorter torso.
Her wardrobe colors consist of mostly dark colors: blacks, burgundy, blue, crimson, purple… However, she also has a few lighter colors such as pearl, ivory, pinks, lavender, and pale yellow. Which color she wears depends greatly upon the occasion and her mood. If it happens to be a more cheery occasion, she’ll wear lighter colors, but on a typical day darker ones reflect her more melancholic or reflective mood.
Her style is a little old-fashioned for the time—she prefers the more structured bustle to the natural form. She wears some floral, but mostly lace, ribbons, and furs. Typical fabrics for her wardrobe are taffeta and silk, with the occasional velvet trim. She has a few cotton dresses which she wears in warmer weather and for more casual occasions. Most of her dresses are two pieces (a dress and bodice) with a bustle and/or jacket to match.
Typically, she does not wear hats, though that is not to say she doesn’t own any, or won’t wear one if the occasion calls for it. She has a few smaller hats with small plumes. She generally prefers to wear veils, and have a few lace ones that she wears to church, along with mesh ones she’ll wear for a typical evening if she is going out. Regularly, she might wear a ribbon in her hair as decoration.
While she doesn’t own a great deal of jewelry, she does enjoy wearing it. Generally her “jewels” consist only of a pair of earrings, but sometimes there will also be a necklace. Her favorite necklace has a center focal piece that is a large horse-shoe-shaped charm. It was given to her as a gift from her first time she went on as an understudy, in the role of Violetta Valérie in Verdi’s La Traviata.
Other accessories that she wears include gloves (usually hand gloves unless the occasion specifically calls for longer), the occasional broach, and a gold pocket watch she keeps tucked away in a pocket in her bodice. She has a couple of ladies cravats, a couple small drawstring purses, and typically also keeps a pocket handkerchief or two handy. Her shoes are usually simple and buckle, rather than laced boots, and have a heel anywhere from one to two inches in height.
Her undergarments are the typical Victorian era layers: stockings, pantaloons or French drawers, petticoats, a chemise, corset, and corset cover. For sleeping, she wears either a long, lace chemise, or full night gown, depending upon the temperature. This is usually the only time she leaves her hair down and free. In her dressing-room at the theatre she’ll wear a dressing gown over her costume backstage, particularly during intermission, so as to keep her costume nice and clean.
Working in a theatre, Christine also regularly wears several different costumes for her job. Some of her costumes are the typical large dresses most people associate with opera, but a lot of her costumes are actually more peasant-style clothing, robes, and even boy clothes for various trouser roles such as Siebel and Cherubino.

Personality:
Christine is overall a very melancholic young lady. She has experienced a lot of death for someone her age (between her father, her mother, and Professor Valerius) and has thus come to realize that human being are extremely fragile, mortal creatures. Even if not through death, she has lost many people around her in one way or another. Such was the case with her childhood friend, Raoul, who left for the navy several years before, and whom she has not seen since. She will often go through periods where the tragedies of the past come back to haunt her and she finds herself almost unable to function in the present because of it.
While she is very social in that she will talk to other people, and is able to make new friends relatively easily, and busies herself in learning and remembering a great number of details about them, and their lives, and their little interests and hobbies, she is rather quiet and closed off about her own life’s details. She prefers to talk to others, discussing their feelings and aspirations, rather than sharing her own emotions with anyone else. She is quite inquisitive, and learning about other people helps her to distract herself from her own feelings.
Rather than sharing her own feelings, she tends to bottle them up inside of herself, along with the general gloom of her past. Though she may be Swedish by birth, her “glitter and be gay” attitude is the mark of a true Parisian, learning to carefully conceal one’s own true emotions beneath a mask of indifference. Keeping this up in public can be rather tiresome, and so there are frequent points when she is alone, or in a private setting, where these bottled up emotions will suddenly burst and come flowing out all at once in a cacophony of conflicting feelings.
Because she is so used to hiding her feelings about things, she has also become quite used to telling little white lies that make the world seem prettier. They usually come when she does not wish for someone to press further into a specific topic, and so rather than giving them the truth, she’ll give them what they want to hear so no further questions will be asked. This being said, she is not generally a very good liar, and it’s usually quite easy to tell when she’s saying something other than the truth (though you would think she’d be better at concealing it, being an actress and all).
When she was younger, Christine was always a cheerful and rather optimistic free-spirit. She loved life and everything in it, particularly nature and fantasy. Due to her fairly primitive education in her early years, the lines between reality and fantasy seemed almost blurred, and thus she would skip about, seeing “fairies” and “elves” about, and playing endless games. She was very fond of games and never passed up an opportunity to join in on one.
She was a daredevil, taking great fun in playing on the dangerous side of life. She enjoyed ghost stories, and sneaking out in the middle of the night to look for demons. For a while, she was quite brave and unafraid of nearly anything. She was extremely outgoing, and often ended up taking the leadership role in the games that she would play as a child. She would sometimes tease her playmates in jest, usually in attempt to get them to go along with one of her little escapades.
This changed drastically though as she matured and tasted how bitter life could be at times. After realizing just how inconsistent any sort of human bond could be, she began plunging herself deeper and deeper into her religion, seeking comfort and security. She figured that, while human life was fleeting, spiritual love endured for an eternity, and was thus a much safer option.
She had become paranoid with the thought of suffering even more loss than she had already managed to endure, and was therefore rather cautious in any and all decisions. She constantly worries over her Mamma Valerius (particularly her health), as well as the safety of anyone else around her that she considers to be close. Her paranoia sometimes can seem to border on insanity, as she’ll occasionally believe she hears voices or sees shadows that aren’t really there.
While her upbringing was riddled with superstitions, Christine was a very bright girl and often able to see reason to things and tried to think rationally about her situation. Reason and religion often guide her judgment and perspective on things and situations she encounters. If at first she doesn’t understand something, she takes the time to try to explain it to herself inside of her own head before jumping to too many conclusions. However, while she does not believe in ghosts, this is not to say that she doesn’t believe in the existence of other supernatural and mysterious creatures from the stories she heard as a child.
Christine is an enormous people pleaser, and can sometimes be manipulated into doing things she otherwise would not in order to please those around her. She feels the constant need to be able to live up to people’s expectations of her, and sometimes ends up disregarding her own wants and needs in order to do so, which on occasion has proven itself to be quite hazardous. She is constantly aware of the emotions of the people around her, to the point where she feels obligated to please them and to make them happy, and ends up blaming herself if they are not.
Despite this, she is also quite stubborn, and refuses to do something if she has been deliberately told to be someone whom she feels does not possess that authority over her, or if she is already hell-bent on something else. While she’d generally a fairly indecisive person, the decisions which she does make are quite final and usually backed by a very strong and unmoving position on something.
Christine is very careful about class borders, and dislikes even the thought of doing something which others might see as taboo. She has an extremely high moral standard and expects the same from the people around her, which sometimes leads to disappointment. She believes in very traditional roles, which is part of the reason why she dislikes the thought of marriage, as such a thing (in her opinion) would force her to bend her own strong will to suit that of her husband.
While she does crave approval, for the most part she dislikes being the center of attention. She would much rather know privately that her efforts were appreciated than being publically recognized and/or made an example out of. This ties in the fact that she likes to remain a rather private person, and feels her personal life should remain just that—personal.

Biography:
Christine Daaé was born to a poor Swedish couple, Jonas Daaé and his wife, Katerina Liljebladh-Daaé, living in Knivsta, a little village just south of Uppsala. Her parents owned a small farm and her father would sing in the choir at church on Sundays. Her father was a Catholic, and her mother was a Lutheran, but had converted before she married. Being of one of the few Catholic families in Sweden, Jonas Daaé named his little daughter after Dröttning Kristina, the first Catholic queen of Sweden.
Her father was a very fine fiddler and would play for all sorts of festivals and weddings. Little Christine was very gifted in Music from a young age and knew her musical alphabet before she could write and began singing and playing the violin at a very young age. Just before Christine turned five years old, her mother died of typhoid fever. Christine was really too young to remember her mother very well, but kept a red scarf that her mother had made for her the winter before she passed, as a keepsake memory of her.
After her mother died, her father lost taste for all things in life except his daughter and his music, so he sold their farm and took his fiddle and his daughter to go travel to Uppsala trying to fine fame and fortune as a violinist, but instead found poverty. He and Christine traveled around busking and singing for different weddings and festivals to earn a living. The two were inseparable and slept close to each other in the hay in barns at night in order to stay warm.
One day, after about a year of living in the streets, Daaé was playing at a festival in Stockholm where professor Franz Valerius heard him playing. The professor became a patron to his playing and took him and Christine into his home, providing for Christine's education. Christine learned etiquette and several languages, as well as her basic reading, writing, and counting. His wife, Adelaide Valerius, treated Christine as if she were her own daughter. Finally, Christine and her father had a place to call home again.
When Christine was seven years old, Professor Valerius and his wife moved to Paris and brought Daddy Daaé and Christine with them. Paris fascinated Christine, but Daaé often stayed indoors, longing for Sweden where he grew up, and especially for the sea. He would lock himself in his room with his daughter and his violin and they would sing together sad melodies from Scandinavia.
So in the summer when Christine was eight years old, they decided to go on holiday to Perros-Guirec. After a little convincing, Daaé managed to get professor Valerius and his wife to agree to let him take Christine and his violin for two weeks and go travel about like they had in Sweden. During this time, they would go around, singing and playing, taking with them only the music required, and refusing any money that was offered to him. Those who heard were very impressed with Christine's voice and thought that she would become a very great singer one day.
Soon after they returned from their little journey, Daaé and Christine were singing and playing on the beach. A little boy, who had been walking with his governess, heard them and made his governess deviate from their usual walk in order to listen to the two. It was very windy that day, and as Christine and her father were walking on the beach, the wind caught Christine's scarf from her mother and blew it off into the sea. She reached out to grab it, but was too late. the little boy, seeing this, he ran off to fetch her scarf from the sea, despite the protests from his governess. He came back, both he and the scarf completely soaked through. Christine laughed and kissed him merrily. The boy was none other than the Vicomte Raoul de Chagny.
From that moment on, Christine and Raoul become great friends. they would play together every day. By request of both his governess and Professor Valerius, Daaé agreed to give Raoul violin lessons, which Christine would often participate in with them. Christine and Raoul did everything together, but their favorite game was to go around from door to door like beggars, asking for stories to tell. .
As much as they loved the stores from this begging game however, their favorite stories were the ones that Daddy Daaé would tell them at night on the beach. Their favorite of these stories was Daaé's own variation on the Norwegian poem "Den første sorg" about a girl named Little Lotte, who would hear the Angel of Music when she went to sleep.
All of Daddy Daaé's stories had one thing in common and that was the Angel of Music. Daaé insisted that every great Musician had heard the Angel of Music at one point of another. Christine thought that Lotte was very lucky to hear the angel and asked her father if he had heard the Angel as well. Daaé said that he had not, but promised Christine that someday she would, because he would send the Angel to her when he was dead and in heaven.
Another one of their favorite games was to slip out in the night and go to look for the Körrigans. They often liked to look for the creatures from the stories they were told. There was also a courtyard in a church there in Perros where the two liked to play. Sometimes the games that the two would play would border on the dangerous side of things and Christine would have to push Raoul on to encourage him to keep playing. This was particularly true in the case of the Körrigans.
It was a warm summer evening in Perros-Guirec, just after midnight, and well past the bed times of two certain young children, a boy and a girl, who happened to have sneaked out that night to go try to catch a glimpse of the Körrigans dancing by moonlight on the heather. Well... no, that wasn't entirely true. The girl had woken up the boy to tell her that she was going to go look for them and taunted the boy, saying that he would be too afraid to follow. The boy certainly did not wish to be thought a coward, and was rather worried for the girl, who seemed to him to be overly adventurous at times, and so he agreed to follow her out into the fields of heather.
Now, one might wonder why Raoul was so concerned for Christine when she told him that she was going to go see the Körrigans dancing. In order to fully understand why though, one must first know who the Körrigans are. The Körrigans are little demon-elves that dance around wells and puddles, and other water in the night, and are said to steal away little children. Knowing this, one could easily see why he would be concerned for his friend, but Christine somehow thought that the activity would be 'fun.'
“Do you see any?” The girl asked her friend in a loud whisper as she crawled through the field of fragrant purple flora in her night clothes, peering up over the edge like some sort of burrowing animal peering up out of its hole. All of the stories they had heard said that it was the fields of heather where the creatures were seen most often. She raised her hand to her brow, scanning the plain and motioning for Raoul to come search with her.
“I haven't seen any,” the youth said, moving to sit beside her. “Maybe we should go back? Someone might come looking for us...”
“Oh, but don't you want to see the Körrigans? You're too scared, aren't you?” she said with a smirk.
“N-no,” said he, puffing his chest a little and trying to look brave. “I just don't want us to get into trouble!”
“Shh!” she protested, raising a finger to her lips and rolling her eyes. “We're not going to get in trouble. No one even knows that we're here. Now come on. I think I see something over that way and I want to get a better look...”
So many evenings like this passed that summer, with the two of them sneaking out after hours, after playtime was done, and after stories had been told, and after the two of them were supposed to be asleep in bed. They never did see any of the fabled Körrigans (though Christine often claimed to), but the time they spent in those fields of heather was not completely lost. In fact, the reality was quite the contrary. It was through their games they played that the two hearts began to grow closer and, eventually what started as two playmates, became two soul mates.

The time came when Christine and her father were to go back to Paris with the Valerius, and so Christine and Raoul were parted. Back in Paris, Christine continued to be taught by professor Valerius and to sing and play with her father until professor Valerius was hit by a carriage while out walking late at night, and died from his injuries.
They still went back to Perros in the summers, but Christine never saw Raoul there anymore, until when she was twelve years old and in the kitchen, making tea for her father and for Mamma Valerius… and she went into the sitting room to bring it to them and there, standing in the room, was Raoul…. She could feel my heart leap seeing him again, and nearly dropped the tray of tea… She offered to bring him something as well, and showed him around the little house. Daddy Daaé was starting to cough by this point. Christine was happy to see Raoul again, and made sure that she was a good hostess to her guest and dear friend.
Christine remembered Raoul very well and being reunited with him, a sort of warm, fuzzy feeling began to grow inside of her. Though she and Raoul knew each other very well, and though she was normally a very friendly and outgoing person, she suddenly felt shy around him and was very cautious about the way she spoke. She couldn't help but to notice that he had grown more handsome with the time they spent apart and that, as the old saying goes, the absence had also made her heart grow fonder. She hadn't realized just how much she had missed him until that point. Christine did not understand what this feeling was, and decided to keep it to herself.
They sat and talked about any little thing that came to mind, really... what they had done since the last time we saw one another, how their studies were coming along… He told her that he had joined the navy and would be leaving to begin his training very soon and at that moment, though she did not realize it at the time, she could feel my heart breaking…
They talked a bit longer until it began to get dark and he told her that he had to leave… She walked with him to the roadside to see him off and, as he was leaving, he gently pressed a kiss to her lips and she felt as if, somehow her soul had left her body and was ready to go along with him… And then he told her these words: ’Mademoiselle, I shall never forget you’… Christine didn't know if he forgot her, but she never forgot these words from when they were parted by the roadside.
Daddy Daaé's cough continued and only began to grow once until when Christine was thirteen years old, on February twenty-third 1876, he died of a lung condition. He was buried there in Perros-Guirec with his violin in the graveyard of the church where, at the bottom of the hill, Raoul and Christine used to play together as children.
After Daaé died, Christine lost all taste for music. It reminded her too much of him, and only brought back bitter memories of his illness and death. With her father's death, her love for music seemed to have died as well, and also her touch for her art. Adelaide Valerius, who took in Christine as her daughter after Daaé's death, hated to see Christine like this, lost from music, and so she tried to keep her involved with it. The two lived together in a small flat on the Rue Notre Dame des Victoires. Without fail, ever year, on the anniversary of her father's death, Christine would go visit the graveyard in Perros.
At that point, she didn’t want anything to do with Perros, or with music, or stories, or trips to the beach, or flowers, or gardens, or anything, really… She didn’t want to remember any of it because it made her far too upset. She tried as hard as she could to forget about Raoul, but I found it to be rather difficult… their parting by the roadside, and the times they played together kept coming back, no matter how hard she tried to push them away… They came in her dreams, in random conversation with Mamma Valerius, in her day-to-day thoughts... She would find herself sometimes wondering what it was like for him in the navy… She thought that I could make it all go away, her thoughts of her father and of Raoul both, by joining a nunnery, but Mamma Valerius would have nothing of the sort…
When Christine was fourteen years old, in order to please her Mamma Valerius, she entered into the voice performance studies at le Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris. The old woman insisting that it was what her father would have wanted for her, but Christine did not think so…She went through the conservatory as a sort of soulless singing machine, not distinguishing herself there and only taking pride in pleasing her benefactress.
Once she had graduated from the Conservatory, she wasn’t sure what to do next. She still thought that the nunnery seemed a rather inviting option, but Madame Valerius urged her toward opera. There were quite a few opera companies there in Paris, but there was one that she thought she might at least consider…It was the Opéra Garnier. It was fairly new, the hew house for the Opéra de Paris, and quite a beautiful building, not far from her home, but that wasn’t why it interested her… Among its principle patrons was Comte Philippe Georges-Marie de Chagny – Raoul’s older brother… It was a silly thought, perhaps, but she thought to herself that, if Raoul were on leave ever from his duties at the navy then maybe he would come visit the opera with his brother.
She was not sure why the thought had occurred to her, but I knew she wanted to feel complete again, like she'd found myself unable to be since her father had died… She thought that maybe if she could sit there and talk to him (to Raoul) like they had before, that he would be able to help her to reconcile with her father’s death. After all, he’d gone through the same thing when he was a child, just before they met, but poor Christine couldn't understand how he’d been able to. She was still so upset by it, so unhappy despite the fact that it had happened several years before...
Therefore, when she was seventeen years old, after three years of studying at le Conservatoire, she auditioned for and began singing at the Opéra Garnier in small roles and doing some understudy work. This is where she currently works, still remembering the story of the Angel of Music that her father had told her and had promised to send to her, and still waiting for the day when she would finally hear him, and still hoping that her dear friend might come and visit someday.

It was mid-August the first time that Christine Daaé set foot in the backstage in that immense building that was known to many as the ‘Palais’ Garnier. It was quite massive from the outside but on the inside that perspective was easily put to shame. Miles and miles of winding passages and several stories both above and below ground made the place far grander than she had ever before imagined.
She had come into the box office that day with her résumé and a form in hand in order to participate in the auditions which the company was holding for their upcoming season. She’d finished her studies at le Conservatoire, and now Mamma Valerius insisted that she should audition for the various companies around Paris. It still wasn’t what she’d wanted to do with her life, but if it would make her poor bedridden mother happy…
“Can I help you, Mademoiselle?” came the voice of a man who worked there in the box offices.
Christine snapped back into reality (she had been distracted by the beautiful tiling that seemed to cover the place from top to bottom) and painted on a smile. “Yes, I’m here for the auditions? I alrady have the paperwork filled out. I was told they were today…”
“Ah, yes,” replied the man. “The auditions are being held in the rehearsal rooms, behind the stage. Follow me, Mademoiselle.”
“Thank you,” she said, and followed him as he began to walk, passing through a narrow door in the box office that lead to a corridor running behind the stage. The young woman looked about at the surroundings… Some of the halls seemed rather cold and unfinished, the un-chiseled barren stone of the walls exposed as it might be in some ancient temple when it was still under construction. The place was utterly fascinating, like something out of a story, and the girl began to feel more relaxed… more at home…
The man led her into a holding room and took her résumé and application then left. Christine went to go sit in a little wood chair and wait. There were several others there in the room, a couple of whom she recognized from an encounter or so at the Conservatoire in any of the past three years when she studied there.
She folded her little gloved hands in her lap and crossed her ankles, looking about and studying them for a while. They were all looking through their music, making mental notes while they waited to be seen. She had her music with her, though she wasn’t certain that reviewing it would help her any. After all, it did not matter so much to her whether or not they took her.
Nearly an hour passed. She had been busy studying the people, the walls, the little ball of dust that had collected in the corner… everything but her music… when she finally heard her name. “Christine Daaé?”
She stood, collecting her music, and moved toward the door from where everyone seemed to be coming and going after their name was called. This was it. This was what Mamma Valerius had been waiting for… and so she put another smile on and went through the door in order to be heard.

What Type(s) of "Roleplay" Have You Done?:I've done casual RPs, paragraph RPs, formal RPs, written several fanfictions, done stage acting (straight plays, dramaic redings, musicals , opera, etc.), improv, LARP (mostly with the MegMeg), played MMORPGs, and RPGs, card games (Pokémon and Winx Club FTW!) and done some other crap that's probably not coming to mind at this exact second.
Where Have You Roleplayed? What Sites Do You Belong To?: On Skype, over the phone, in person, on several RP Forums on Fanfiction.net (Bienvenue au Palais Garnier [which I created and admin], Box 5, The Old Chestnut Forum, (somethingrather) Asylum for the Mentally Insane, (Appy's random forum that has all dudes except for me and her and occasionally 1 other random chick), Fandom Collision, Facebook, Phantom Manor, 4kids.tv (back when it was cool), An Apple Red as Blood (though I only have a graphics shop there. I don't RP there. Aaaaaand apparently it no longer exists .-.)
What Fandoms Have You Played Before?: Phantom of the Opera (Leroux primarily, but also including [though not limited to] the Andrew Lloyd Webber 1986 musical, the Yeston/Kopit musical, Love Never Dies, the 2004 Joel Schumacher film, and several original Phantom plots [The Angel's Lament FTW! ]) [char: Christine, Carlotta, Gustave, Meg, Philippe, OCs], The Winx Club (Don't judge me! That show used to be awesome before they rewrote everything) [char: Bloom, OCs], The Lord of the Rings [char: Lady Arwen Undómiel], Farscape [char: Moya], Star Wars [char: Princess Leia Organa-Solo, OCs], Pokémon [char: OCs], Steampunk [char: OCs], World of Warcraft [char: Dranai Discipline Priest, Blood Elf Warlock, Blood Elf Holy Paladin, Human Holy Priest, Human Mage, Pandaran Rogue], Adventure Quest [char: Human Lucian Vampire Slayer], Runescape [char: Mage], Diablo [char: sorceress, monk], Teen Titans [Starfire Korriander], Titan Quest [char: nature class, dream class, earth class, undead class], Hamtaro (shifty eyes) [char: Bijoux, OCs], Sonic the Hedgehog [char: Amy, OCs], Vampires (oxymoron vampires really. I have a Vampiric Vampire Slayer who is also a member of the light clan :I I can't do actual vampires XD ) [char: OCs], Downton Abbey [char: Mary Crawley], Les Misérables [Cosette Fauchelevant], Disney (Phineas and Ferb [char: Perry the Platypus/Agent P]), and several Original Plot RPs including (but not limited to) Asylum, Utopian, Medieval, and a bunch or random crossover junk.

Sources Used In Research: I used a bit from my applications on Phantom Manor and on Fandom Collision, as well as certain posts where I elaborated on her character on Phantom Manor. I also used the Leroux novel (duuh! She's Leroux cannon), the Christine Nilsson wikipedia page, and about 7-8 years worth of random knowledge I've accumulated so much of that it would be impossible to pinpoint exact original sources for all of it. I also used my Swedish fellow Nilsson lover (you know who you are) as inspiration for portions of the history.
