It is 1882-1883 Paris, France, and both the Parisiens and visitors alike bustle about in their daily lives. In the very heart of Paris is the recently constructed Op?ra Garnier, where performers, and scene-shifters, and all sorts of people from all sorts of professions busy themselves with maintenance and with preparations for performances.
Unknown to all but a small handful (and even to most of these, only as a myth), a spectre of a man dwells below them in the cellars, watching them, musing upon them, and occasionally preying upon their fears for sport, or acting as an invisible puppet master to the company.
Who knows what terrors this mysterious "Phantom" is capable of, or what surprisingly frightening or blissfully wondrous secrets he may have in store.

Christine had been continuing her explorations of the various levels of the opera house. The building was quite immense, in fact, it was the largest opera house in the entire world! She’d managed to loose herself more than once during her little adventures, though after a bit of retracing, she was able to find her way back without too much trouble.
Today though, as she came exploring, she was finally starting on the ground level of the building. While it was her intention to go floor by floor, working her way slowly downward and taking time to meet and observe everyone she happened upon along the way, something that she saw on this particular day sparked the girl’s curiosity and caused her to deter from her intended course.
There, wide open, was a doorway that lead downward into the bowels of the opera house. Christine had heard strange tales of the levels below from the people she had met already. There were stories of ghosts, and strange spirits… while she personally did not believe any of them to be true (after all, they were just silly little superstitions), the idea of such fascinated her. She’d always been very fond of old legends, and of having new adventures… Perhaps another adventure was in store now.
The girl looked around to see if anyone might protest her going down, but given the time of day, this part of the opera in particular was completely empty. Well… It can do no harm just to have a look around… she thought to herself. After all, she did work here, despite how much she resented it.
Erik stalked up in the catwalks of the main stage, checking over the ropes and set pieces that hung precariously over the space. He never really fully trusted the stage hands who mucked about up here. They were drunkards, the lot of them, and they tended to blame all of their mishaps on him. And he wasn't about to have that happen for the début show of the little Swede. Carefully, he checked over every single sandbag, every rope that controlled the sets, every piece that could possibly cause a problem. He didn't need anything happening during that performance...
When he was through checking over everything, he dropped himself out of the catwalks, to the floor, and then through a trapdoor. No one could ever follow him through the trapdoors, if they saw him. Trapdoors practically obeyed his every whim. He opened and shut them as he pleased! Not to mention he personally built these trapdoors. Quietly, he shut the trapdoor to the stage and navigated through the passage beneath the stage, keeping close to the shadows of the walls. It was more open down here in the cellars, and he didn't want to get caught. Even after years of sneaking about down here, Erik thought that he could never be too careful.

Christine wandered down the staircase, not quite sure as to where she was going. She didn’t think the place could be too much bigger, really. It was very large, but she’d explored a good portion of the upper levels already. How much more could there really be in comparison?
When she got down, the place was fairly dark. All that there was lighting the place were a few dim gas lanterns along some of the walls, but the vast number of props and such that were there, prepared for the upcoming performance, cast so many shadows that it was nearly impossible to tell whether or not there was anyone else down there.
“This must be near the stage…” she murmured aloud. It made sense, considering the location of the staircase which she had gone down. She proceeded to walk further into the place. Little strips of lights shown in from above with the few trap doors that were open, but the stage was dark, so it wasn’t much. She heard a click, like that of something shutting, but didn’t catch sight of anything in the ill-lit area. “Hello?” she asked aloud. Perhaps it was a few of the stagehands preparing things for the performance…
Erik dashed behind a prop when he heard the voice. It sounded familiar...Moving around the prop, he sneaked behind a larger set piece that was closer to the owner of the voice. In the dim light, he barely caught a glimpse of the glimmer of gold that he knew from his little espionage sessions. It was now completely unmistakable. It was that little Swede!
But...whatever was she doing down here? Exploring, more than likely. She worked here, of course, so there was nothing he could really do to prevent her from doing as she wished, but he'd never taken her as a very courageous girl.
Erik cocked his head. Perhaps he should let her explore. He could see how brave she really was then, and gauge for himself how much she could take. He'd learned a lot about her recently, and as such, he'd appropriately stored any and all useful information in the recesses of his mind. This would only serve as yet another useful learning experience, if she could handle the cellars better than the little ballet girls who jumped at any sign of movement or slight noise.

There was no response from anywhere within the room. In fact, it appeared that other than her, there was not a soul in there. It must have just been the shadows playing tricks on her. After all, it was still rather early for most people to be in the theatre…
She let out a silent sigh in relief and looked around a bit. So this was where all of the sets were stored during a performance… After all, they had to come up somehow. She looked up, observing the various trapdoors and such in the stage. She’d never paid such close attention to the details of the inner workings of this place before.
She wondered how much they would use these during The Barber of Seville. Dress rehearsals were scheduled to start soon, and then they would begin performances. Of course, there were several other productions the house did as well, but seeing as she was still new and learning the ropes of everything, she hadn’t performed in them yet.
Erik watched her. She seemed comfortable enough down here, under the stage. As comfortable as a woman could be, really. How much longer would she stay? How much further would she go...? He didn't think she'd be all that brave, honestly, so he sat back and waited for one of the rats to scare her back into the light of the surface.
He watched as the girl examined the trap-doors, and for a moment, he thought...perhaps she is fond of illusions? Erik quickly shook the thought from his head. It was silly of him to question such things. He shouldn't be thinking on such frivolous and useless things. It wasn't like he'd be paying her social visits! He was only an observer with others here at the Garnier, and sometimes he played a spectre. Never, however, did he play patron. Perhaps one day he'd try it out at a public function, just to see how many people would catch on, but it seemed like a far off thing.
Erik realized that his thoughts were straying, and he turned his attention back to the girl, watching the glint of her blonde hair in the dim lighting, and made sure to keep his ears peaked so he knew how close she was.

Judging from the many openings up to the stage above, and from the number of set pieces and props just laying around, she assumed that this was likely where they brought them up for quick scene changes during the show. It was interesting to see just how many things really went on for the process of putting on just a single performance at the opera house.
she moved further on, completely unaware of the shadow lurking behind her. It was darker here, without the light coming in from the stage above. She tensed just a little. She disliked the dark, and was uncertain whether she should continue on or not. There was nothing preventing her from turning around and going backward, after all. Nobody would think of her any differently… No, no… She couldn’t do that. she would think of herself in a different light, and that was truly the terrible thing about it… She had to keep going. After all, she had made a promise to herself to explore the entire opera house--not just part of it--and promises were things that were meant to be kept.
The second cellar? This little Swede was quite brave, indeed! Erik smirked. Perhaps he had underestimated the girl's disposition. He crept quietly behind her, trying to get a good look at her body language. Granted, his eyesight was rather keen, even in the dark. But perhaps he could try working around to get a look at her face, so he could see what frightened her.....
It was at that moment when it passed through his head, whether or not he'd actually be amused to see her scared. Erik couldn't place it. He honestly didn't know. He felt that he knew the little Swede better than he knew most people at the Opera besides Carlotta, Carolus and the managers. So would he be conflicted at scaring the little Swede, or particularly amused?
He shook his head.
Focus, Erik. Focus. Don't go blithering on, even if it is just in your head.

Christine was uncertain what to expect from the rest of this little adventure, but if she was going to be forced to remain in this place, then it made sense for her to at least get to know her surroundings better. Besides that, it gave her something to do with time, in order to distract herself from the rather unpleasant feelings she experienced whenever she was around the opera house.
To be quite honest, it was a similar experience to when she was a child. There was once a time when she had been so very adventurous as a child, sneaking out into the night to look for goblins dancing by the moonlight, listening to her father’s stories, some of which were quite dark, and filled with mystery…
She stopped a moment and let out a soft sigh. Perhaps this wasn’t such a good idea after all…
She turned back a moment, as if she meant to go back, but didn’t move backward. She merely stood there a few moments, staring back in the direction that she had come from, before turning around again and continuing on down the stairs into the second cellar.
It was far more spacious than what she’d seen of the first cellar. She imagined that they would probably get bigger and bigger as one traveled deeper and deeper… to some extent, at least.
The lighting still was not very good in most places, and so it was difficult for one to be able to see what—or who—lay ahead.
This girl was braver than most, and Erik assessed that though she wanted to turn back, she wasn't going to...not just yet. Why was that? She turned, and for a moment, Erik had to close his eyes, and hope that she hadn't seen the flash of his irises in the dark. He heard her shuffle and chanced looking at her again, to see her start walking down the stairs. He stayed at least ten paces from her, following her into the darkness of the second cellar. He took advantage of the dim lighting to get closer and slip into a corner that would let him observe her at a better angle. Being behind her was starting to become slightly bothersome.
Erik leaned against the wall, scoping out possible hiding places should he need to make a hurried getaway. He didn't think he would have to, but it was best to keep one's options open. If it really came down to it, he could always knock her out somehow...but a turning in his stomach made him stop with that thought. Was he really reconsidering? His own safety being at risk, and he had to stop to consider how immoral knocking out a girl would be? He shook his head, as though to clear his head of the thought.
