It is 1882-1883 Paris, France, and both the Parisiens and visitors alike bustle about in their daily lives. In the very heart of Paris is the recently constructed Op?ra Garnier, where performers, and scene-shifters, and all sorts of people from all sorts of professions busy themselves with maintenance and with preparations for performances.
Unknown to all but a small handful (and even to most of these, only as a myth), a spectre of a man dwells below them in the cellars, watching them, musing upon them, and occasionally preying upon their fears for sport, or acting as an invisible puppet master to the company.
Who knows what terrors this mysterious "Phantom" is capable of, or what surprisingly frightening or blissfully wondrous secrets he may have in store.

Christine had been moving about the opera house that day, exploring the various levels and passages. She figured that, if she were going to be forced to stay here, he might as well get to know the place a bit better. Perhaps it would even help to distract her from all of the unpleasant memories that music brought up.
The house was very big, and so she had come up with a method for exploring the whole thing. She would start at the very top and work her way down level by level. After all, with the roof areas, all of the regular levels, and then the cellars… this could certainly take some time to be able to see. It would keep her busy though, which was the ultimate goal.
When she got up to the rafters, they were far busier than she expected. She knew that most of the ballet dancers, along with nearly all of the students of the ballet school, lived at the opera… but she hadn’t realized where exactly the dormitories were until now. Granted, most of the girls and boys were off in classes, or in rehearsal, but a few still remained.
She looked around, stopping a moment to let a couple of boys run in front of her down one of the corridors. She wondered who else could be up here. They weren’t very far under the roof… no wonder the dancers were commonly referred to as ‘the rats’…

“Wait!” cried a tiny voice from behind. The soft patter of slippered feet then followed and suddenly an oddly small child hurried past. A door slammed shut ahead where the boys had entered, thus, leaving the small child out in the corridor (though thankfully not alone). Upon reaching the door, Ludivine, plopped down on the wooden floor with a rather dejected look on her face.
Her gaze then slowly drifted back down the corridor to the lady she had only fleetingly noticed a moment before. Ludivine did not recognize her but feared a scolding for running in the hallway or worse… for not being where she should be. Ludivine stood back up and like a person sent to the executioner solemnly made her way back to the lady (whom she had decided was very beautiful). “I’m ready.” The child extended her arm as if to allow the lady to cart her off. All in all, it was quite an amusing scene.

Christine watched as the two boys ran by and disappeared into a doorway, closing the door behind them. There was a little bit of a delay, but soon afterward there came the pitter patter of little feet. It turned out that the sound belonged to a little girl who was only knee-high to a grasshopper. The poor thing seemed rather upset and left out when she could no longer follow the boys. But then… then something rather curious happened.
The little girl came up to Christine with her head hung in shame and held out her arm, saying ‘I’m ready.’ Christine blinked a moment and then looked around her to check if there was anyone else there in the hallways that the girl might be talking to, but the two were alone. She turned back to the little pixie before her with a rather confused air. “I… I’m sorry? I believe that you must have me confused with someone else…”
She bit her lip a little. Was it normal for a child so young to be left here unattended? She knelt down so that she was closer to the girl’s level and looked at her. “Are you lost?...” She looked at the girl for a moment longer and then gently pushed her arm down and lifted her chin so that she could study her. She was an adorable little thing, but she seemed to be upset or ashamed by something. What that something was though, Christine could not even begin to fathom.
She waited a little bit before speaking to the girl again. “My name is Christine…. And you are?”

‘I… I’m sorry? I believe that you must have me confused with someone else…’
Ludivine had expected retribution and was caught quite off guard when the lady spoke to her so gently. Tears began to well up in her eyes and threatened to fall upon her cheeks. Was she not in trouble? The little girl stood wary and became so astonished when the lady knelt before her and spoke again.
‘Are you lost?’
Was she lost? Ludivine thought a moment and made eye contact with the beautiful lady as her chin was lifted. She was not physically lost. The room where she slept was down the corridor from where she had come and the studio where her class practiced was nearby also. Ludivine knew this space and others quite well due to her time there as a student and her explorations.
She was emotionally lost, however. “I’m lost from my papa.” She said softly in a pensive manner. Her response was vague, yet she gave no other immediate details save for her name upon introduction “Ludivine.”

The little girl looked as if she were about to cry, though Christine couldn’t imagine why. Had she done something wrong to hurt the girl’s feelings? The girl told her that she was ‘lost from her papa’—a statement at which Christine could not help but to feel her hear sink a little. She… could understand the feeling, though she imagined in a different sense than this little girl… or at least, she hoped so….
“Ludivine…,” she repeated gently. “That’s a nice name. How old are you, Ludivine?” She looked very very young. And she was so small…
She took the little girl’s hand and mustered up a smile like she usually did when she needed to be ‘presentable.’ “Should we go look for your papa then? Maybe we can find him. I’m sure he can’t be too terribly far away. He must be very worried about you…”

“Three.” Ludivine responded holding three fingers up on her right hand. Her hand then dropped and to her surprise the lady, Christine, took it within her own. The child’s gaze went back and forth from the beautiful lady’s face to their joined hands. This simple, typically un-noteworthy gesture meant a great deal to Ludivine and finally she returned a smile- half sobbed. Her father too had held her hand in such a manner… but that was painfully long ago.
‘Should we go look for your papa then? Maybe we can find him. I’m sure he can’t be too terribly far away. He must be very worried about you…’
“I haven’t seen my papa in a long time. He doesn’t want me anymore!” She cried forlornly. Tears then began to escape from her eyes and trickle down her rosy cheeks. Ludivine held tighter to Christine’s hand and pressed her curly head to the woman’s shoulder.

Three years old…. She looked rather small, even for three… then again, it had been some time since she had really known anyone who was three years of age. She had been staying inside more and more with Mamma Valerius since she had lost use of her legs, so it wasn’t often she met new people outside of her former courses at le Conservatoire, and now here at the Opéra…
What she said afterward though, when she tried to take her to find her father, caught the young woman off guard.
He doesn’t want me anymore! Didn’t want her? The poor girl began crying. “Oh dear…. Shhh…. Shhh, please don’t cry. Please don’t…” She looked around to see if anyone there would come to help the poor girl, but they appeared to be the only two up there. With a moment of hesitation, she wrapped her arms around the little girl, pressing her head to her shoulder and stroking her blonde ringlets gently.
“Shhh… I’m sure he still wants you… It will be all right…” She looked around, spotting the wall, and scooted her way closer so as to be able to get back up, and then slowly, using the wall as support, stood, clinging to the little girl. She stumbled a bit, but did manage to stand holding the girl “Shhh…”
Ludivine could not help but to cry… her heart ached for the loss of her father. It ached for the loneliness she felt, however, now she was not truly alone. The woman held her! And she felt a hand upon her head. The little girl then cried louder (though not in sadness but joy). The difference between her cries, however, could not be told.
‘Shhh… I’m sure he still wants you… it will be all right…’
Ludivine clung tightly to the woman. Especially as she shifted position and moved to stand. Would it really be alright? She wondered… wishing this was her father come for her (though not at all wishing Christine away).
‘Shhh…’
No, not at all. Her crying began to ease and she held her head back to look at her protector in an endearing yet quizzical manner. She wiped at her own eyes with the back of her small hand and suppressed any further sobs. “Are you real?” She seemed so but with all the tales going around who could be sure?

The little girl was crying more. Christine really didn’t know what more she could do than just to hold the girl, rocking her gently and shushing her, and so that was what she did.
Finally, after a couple of minutes, Ludivine’s crying began to calm and the tot asked her a rather strange question.
Are you real?”
Christine blinked and stared at the little girl for a moment, confused a little by her question, and wondering whether or not she had heard her correctly. When she fully realized that the girl was quite serious though, she could not help a smile tugging at the corner of her lips and a little laugh escaped her.
“Of course I’m real,” she said, rather matter-of-factly. “Why wouldn’t I be?”
She really was a bit confused by it. She let out another chuckle, smiling at the girl with the first genuine smile she’d given since coming to the opera house. “Are you feeling a bit better now?”
She leaned back a bit to better balance the child, and then brushed her little cheek with a thumb. “I know what would make you feel better… Tell me, Ludivine, do you like sweets?”

“Of course I’m real, why wouldn’t I be?”
Ludivine had a pensive look on her face. To a three year old the tales told of ghosts and ethereal beings were quite believable. A child as young as she did not have an established sense between reality and fantasy, things just were as they were told. This lady, however, could not be a ghost… especially the opera ghost with the purported deaths head. No. She was too beautiful, like an angel… could she be? Yes. The girl thought as Christine laughed and smiled.
“Are you feeling a bit better now?”
Ludivine returned the smile and halfheartedly nodded her curly head in response. She did still miss her father.
“I know what would make you feel better… Tell me, Ludivine, do you like sweets?”
At the mention of sweets Ludivine’s eyes grew large. “Oh, yes!” She exclaimed in excitement, clapping her small hands together before clasping them about Christine’s neck. If Ludivine hadn’t yet found the woman endearing (though of course she had) she certainly would now.

Christine could not help but to smile wider at the little girl’s reaction. There was something about the joy of a child that spread like a wildfire. She rubbed teh girl’s back a bit as the little arms were clasped around her ivory neck.
Oh, yes!
The young soprano chuckled a little at the youngling’s enthusiasm and took a few steps, still carrying her. “Me too,” Christine said. “I have some in my dressing room, if you would like to share them with me. I would get so terribly lonely having to eat them all by myself”
She was often lonely anyway, and much expected that would still be the case after the child’s company ended. After all, the girl must have classes that she should have been attending, and whoever was in charge of watching her would surely notice that she had gone missing and become worried before too long...
